In 1726, the Würzburg physician and professor Johann Bartholomäus Adam Beringer published his work "Lithographia Wirceburgensis", in which he outlined the then-current theories of paleontology. Beringer included engraved plates depicting 204 figure stones, which he claimed were discovered near Eibelstadt in 1725 and brought to him. These stones bore images of insects, frogs, plants, birds, suns, and even Hebrew and Arabic script.
The university library holds 184 of these figure stones, 37 of which can be directly matched to those illustrated on the copper plates in "Lithographia Wirceburgensis". The collection brings together various sources: the 3D digital reproductions of the 37 figure stones from the library’s collection that correspond to Beringer’s work, as well as the original publication of "Lithographia Wirceburgensis" (first edition 1726, reprint 1767).
