The Physico-Medical Society was founded in Würzburg on December 2, 1849. During the inaugural meeting on December 8, Professor of Anatomy Albert Koelliker (1817–1905) was elected its first president. The Society aimed to promote all branches of medical and natural sciences, to investigate the "natural-historical and medical conditions of Franconia," to encourage local physicians to engage in scientific work, and to offer students the opportunity, through public events, to "observe their teachers in the midst of their research." This mission aligned with the goals of the Würzburg Philosophical-Medical Society, founded in 1827, which was incorporated into the Societas Physico-Medica in 1853.
Since 1850, the Physico-Medica presented its research findings through periodic publications, which have been systematically digitized by the University Library of Würzburg and are available through the Digital Journal Collection. In addition, handwritten meeting minutes, printed statutes, commemorative publications, and library catalogs are included, with digitized versions consolidated in this collection. Although the digitized objects represent key milestones in the history of the Physico-Medical Society, they constitute only a portion of the extensive library collection that the Society entrusted to the University Library of Würzburg in 1880.
