Journey of the Pfalzgraf Ottheinrich

The year was 1536 - Ottheinrich of the Palatinate, thirty-four years old and ruler of the Principality of Palatinate-Neuburg, was heavily in debt. Ottheinrich, who is not only an imposing figure due to his considerable girth, also becomes known for his lack of thrift, his enjoyment of representation, feasting and hunting, as well as his great patronage of the arts. In order to avoid the impending bankruptcy of the principality, he recalls a promissory note in his possession. The dowry of his Polish grandmother Hedwig! This had never been paid since the "Landshut Wedding" with George the Rich in 1475. Ottheinrich now travelled to Krakow in the autumn of 1536 and actually received the outstanding sum of 32,000 guilders. This elaborate journey is accompanied by an artist who apparently captures the rest stops in daily stages on 50 watercolours, thus documenting the journey through eastern Germany, the Czech Republic and parts of Poland
